Dr Gavin JD Smith

Research Assistant Professor

Gavin Smith is a Research Assistant Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases at HKU, where he coordinates sequencing and genetic analysis of viruses from market surveillance programs. He also provides training on influenza surveillance and methods of molecular analysis, and technical support for their research programs, to physicians, veterinary specialists and research scientists throughout Asia. His primary training was in ecology and evolution at both the University of Melbourne and the University of Hong Kong. Dr Smith's primary research interests relate to elucidating the ecology and evolution of emerging infectious viruses, primarily influenza and SARS, in Asia; and in using computational methods to determine genetic factors involved in the spread and adaptation of influenza virus in different hosts. Dr Smith was recently awarded a 7-year Career Development Award by NIAID/NIH for this work and is also Co-Chair of the WHO Working Group on Evolution and Nomenclature of Influenza A (H5N1) Virus.
